Letting Go… lets us Grow

Dear Reader:

” What if trees really did refuse to let go of their dying leaves?”

Sounds bizarre doesn’t it? Yet aren’t we all guilty of doing just this to ourselves? Don’t we try any and everything we can, to postpone letting go of something familiar and comforting in our lives …even when we know it’s viable purpose no longer serves our needs?

In fact we are so afraid of being forced into a new career, move, home, or relationship we hang on to the old … even when we know it is ” killing” our opportunity for a fresh start… new opportunities? Sometimes we go as far as to ” clothes pin” ourselves to the past!

A God Wink! When I came across this spiritual message I knew I needed to open myself up more to changes around me.

Sometimes you just have to turn the page to realize there is more to your book of life than the page you’re stuck on.

Stop being afraid to move on. Close this chapter of hurt, and never re-read it again.

It’s time to get what your life deserves, and move on from the things that don’t deserve you.

Don’t spend your days trying to correct your past, instead, let go and let God create something better for your future.

I remember when Rutledge and Lachlan were little… Rutledge would always come running up to me and say ” BooBoo I’m crazy ( while making circle motions around his head) BUT ” Lachie” is REALLY CRAZY !” Rutledge would start laughing while I laughed so Lachlan joined in too-( happy to be part of the laughter! )

Rutledge was right… we humans are all just a little bit crazy when it comes to avoiding change and refusing to take leaps of faith! But if we don’t …we stay mired down in the ” what could have been” mud puddles of life!

So until tomorrow…we can all learn from October. ” Autumn shows us how beautiful it is to let things go.”

I was born a Tarheel but ended up a Sandlapper. My grandparents were cotton farmers in Laurens, South Carolina and it was in my grandmother’s house that my love of storytelling began beside an old Franklin stove. When I graduated from Laurens High School, I attended Erskine College (Due West of what?) and would later get my Masters Degree in Education/Social Studies from Charleston Southern. I am presently an adjunct professor/clinical supervisor at CSU and have also taught at the College of Charleston. For 28 years I taught Social Studies through storytelling. My philosophy matched Rudyard Kipling’s quote: “If history were taught in the form of stories, it would never be forgotten.” Today I still spread this message through workshops and presentations throughout the state. The secret of success in teaching social studies is always in the story. I want to keep learning and being surprised by life…it is the greatest teacher. Like Kermit said, “When you’re green you grow, when you’re ripe you rot.”
