The Calm Before the Storm

Dear Reader:

I am hoping this (rather) depressing picture of my empty front porch will be the worst part of the storm. My first responsibility has been to bring “Big Red” in and put it on my side… safe and sound.

So after getting all the newly placed Halloween and Fall decorations back down and put away…the porch does look quite sterile….so un-Becky-like.

The house is ready….so come on Matthew….give me your “best” shot (which I hope comes from way out in the ocean) and then leave my premises, please!

I came across this small but powerful prayer for deliverance from a storm and thought the time was quite appropriate to use it.

God of heaven and earth, God who carries our lives and the lives of our whole community in your hands, be with us in the peril of this day and night.

Help us to release our anxieties and fears into those same caring hands, knowing in faith that your will be there for us is life and everlasting good.

Send your holy angels to watch over us and guard us. May they spread their holy wings to give us shelter against the storm.

For you alone, O God, are all good, all life, all love, and that love is for us; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

…………………………

So until tomorrow…May God watch over everyone and deliver us safely from the storm.

About Becky Dingle

I was born a Tarheel but ended up a Sandlapper. My grandparents were cotton farmers in Laurens, South Carolina and it was in my grandmother’s house that my love of storytelling began beside an old Franklin stove. When I graduated from Laurens High School, I attended Erskine College (Due West of what?) and would later get my Masters Degree in Education/Social Studies from Charleston Southern. I am presently an adjunct professor/clinical supervisor at CSU and have also taught at the College of Charleston. For 28 years I taught Social Studies through storytelling. My philosophy matched Rudyard Kipling’s quote: “If history were taught in the form of stories, it would never be forgotten.” Today I still spread this message through workshops and presentations throughout the state. The secret of success in teaching social studies is always in the story. I want to keep learning and being surprised by life…it is the greatest teacher. Like Kermit said, “When you’re green you grow, when you’re ripe you rot.”
