God is Larger than Time

Dear Reader:

Michele Robertson sent me some sample scriptures of miracles God performed for His people, even His own Son… yet there were still disbelievers among the receivers. Some people never see miracles unfolding in their own daily lives.

One re-reading of scripture made me stop and think about the significance of the time-order from this passage. It is one of the most famous stories from the new Testament…the story of the ” Two Fishes and the Five Loaves.”

Jesus is never in doubt about the miracle that is about to transpire. When He prays to God, it is simply to thank Him (ahead of time) for the miracle that is forthcoming. Jesus had no doubt at all that enough food would be provided to feed the five thousand. That wasn’t even an issue. Jesus knew God would provide for them and thanked Him for this miracle.

Now that is faith at its best…perfectly mentored to His followers….to have so much faith in God that we know the miracle will occur…perhaps not on our time-table or in the form we imagined…but it will occur…of that we should never doubt.

Now let’s think about our own prayers for daily miracles…don’t they sometimes contain more doubt than faith? They might sound like this: “Well God I know it would take a miracle for me to get this new job but if it isn’t too much trouble and everything and if You think I am kinda worthy…I sure would like this promotion….and I kinda need You to jump in right now, if You’re not too busy, since the deadline for application is tomorrow.” ” Oh yeah…thanks.”

Of course then when we don’t get the new job, promotion, relationship, house, car, whatever… when we think we need it…we  turn bitter and blame God for waiting too late to make our requests materialize and His answer evident…

His answer was evident…it just wasn’t what we wanted to hear so we ignored it. This was not the right time for that new job…a better, more suitable job would come up for grabs in six months, but only God knew this and He also knew the wait would pay back dividends to the prayer requester in the end.

As much as we like to blame  God when things don’t come out the way we expected them to…God is never in a hurry, He is never late, and He is always on time. Faith is trusting God to show us the right way at the right time.

*Proverbs 19:2 says, “Impatience will get you into trouble.” It’s frustrating to be in a hurry and God isn’t. God is never in a hurry! The Bible says a day is like a thousand years and a thousand years like a day to God. He’s larger than time. One of the most useless things to try to do is to speed up God. When we try to take matters into our own hands and help God out, we get in trouble.

*Source: “In a Delay, You can Trust God’s Timing.” Rick Warren

The Bible says to trust God’s timing: “Rest in the Lord, wait patiently for him to act …. Don’t fret and worry — it only leads to harm” (Psalm 37:7-8)

*I had a chance to test this piece of scripture last week as I tried to rest, eat right, and not over-do to see if my “miracle” could occur…to get my blood count numbers up over the critically low count level. Doing nothing has never come easy to me…but somehow I, intuitively, knew that I had to have faith that rest and nourishment would help me get back on the right health track. And it did.

*Resting can be an act of faith. It means you’re waiting on God. When Jesus and the disciples were in a boat that was caught in a big storm, Jesus  kept sleeping through all the ruckus while the disciples freaked out. When they woke him up to ask, “Why are you sleeping?!” he responded, “Do you think God is going to let the boat sink with me in it?” By sleeping through the storm, Jesus was saying that we can trust God even in the middle of a storm.

I still feel that God isn’t through with me yet…that “God is not going to let the boat sink with me in it” or in this case, let the blood count number sink too low within my body. God wanted me to rest, to sleep, and to have enough faith in Him to steer the ship through this personal storm in my life… while I rested. It worked.

So until tomorrow:

I told Honey I would be happy to see one snowflake…I do love to watch snow fall….there is nothing lovelier. Such a sense of peace and serenity.

About Becky Dingle

I was born a Tarheel but ended up a Sandlapper. My grandparents were cotton farmers in Laurens, South Carolina and it was in my grandmother’s house that my love of storytelling began beside an old Franklin stove. When I graduated from Laurens High School, I attended Erskine College (Due West of what?) and would later get my Masters Degree in Education/Social Studies from Charleston Southern. I am presently an adjunct professor/clinical supervisor at CSU and have also taught at the College of Charleston. For 28 years I taught Social Studies through storytelling. My philosophy matched Rudyard Kipling’s quote: “If history were taught in the form of stories, it would never be forgotten.” Today I still spread this message through workshops and presentations throughout the state. The secret of success in teaching social studies is always in the story. I want to keep learning and being surprised by life…it is the greatest teacher. Like Kermit said, “When you’re green you grow, when you’re ripe you rot.”
