Winks and Blinks

Dear Reader:

As I watched Eva Cate accepting her kindergarten graduation “diploma” Thursday evening… my thoughts went back over three decades when Mandy graduated from the Summerville Presbyterian Church kindergarten with “Miss” Kitty Murrell as her teacher. Wasn’t it yesterday? Now it seemed like (the title of Madeleine L’Engle’s popular children’s book) a “Wrinkle in Time.

Proverbs 18:9:  “A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.”

Thank goodness for God, not only directing my steps, but literally pushing me in the right direction…to where I am today…as close to heaven as I will get here on earth.

I have my grown children and their families living close to me, my garden, a diverse group of friends and health that allows me to not only “sit up and take nourishment” but go basically wherever I feel like going! Pure freedom! A blink and all my dreams have come true!

But besides blinking….I had to laugh at a God’s Wink that hit me square in the face when I discovered what part Eva Cate had in the graduation skit.

The children wrote and scripted the play….the basic plot was that the mean old wolves were trying to prevent graduation…. all the other animals and hunters had, in turn, to try to stop the wolves from ruining the ceremony. As the “ELEPHANT” Eva Cate used her trunk (arm) to squirt water on the wolves to push them back. Obviously the hunters and forest animals were successful since the “show went on” as scheduled.

I am just so happy at this stage in my life….I can finally see God’s blinks and winks and share His smile in the God-made “coincidences.”

Here are some pre-graduation surprises….even Jakie was  excited on the way to the ECDC Graduation at the Stern Center Garden (ended up inside the building….rain.)

*Anne…Eva Cate loved the watercolor painting and poem…she took it to graduation with her and had me show it and read the poem at the dining table. Thank you again for sharing your remarkable talents so generously!

As we were heading out of the Stern Building the children spotted a game room for the college students and made a mass invasion. The way Eva Cate was holding that pool stick….I think she learned more than just the ABC’s in pre-school. (“Yes….we have Trouble…right here in River City…it begins with “T”  and rhymes with “P” and stands for “Pool.”)

So until tomorrow…Remember there’s no “Trouble, Trouble, Trouble” if we follow the footsteps and direction God has provided  us…nothing we can’t overcome with His guidance .

*Kaitlyn and Tommy….Eva Cate loved her own and her doll (Gracie) matching nightgowns! All three of us slept together Thursday night!

Gracie is very well behaved and rarely talks!

About Becky Dingle

I was born a Tarheel but ended up a Sandlapper. My grandparents were cotton farmers in Laurens, South Carolina and it was in my grandmother’s house that my love of storytelling began beside an old Franklin stove. When I graduated from Laurens High School, I attended Erskine College (Due West of what?) and would later get my Masters Degree in Education/Social Studies from Charleston Southern. I am presently an adjunct professor/clinical supervisor at CSU and have also taught at the College of Charleston. For 28 years I taught Social Studies through storytelling. My philosophy matched Rudyard Kipling’s quote: “If history were taught in the form of stories, it would never be forgotten.” Today I still spread this message through workshops and presentations throughout the state. The secret of success in teaching social studies is always in the story. I want to keep learning and being surprised by life…it is the greatest teacher. Like Kermit said, “When you’re green you grow, when you’re ripe you rot.”
