The Unforgettable “Anchors” in Our Lives…

Dear Reader:

When we take time to reflect back on our lives…we come to the realization that we were able to function and live the life we were destined to live…because of the “anchors” in our  lives.

For most of growing up these “anchors” started out as our mothers or fathers…particularly when the parent was a single parent, who sacrificed  much so that we could have a better life. Later these “anchors” became special teachers, coaches, or counselors who could guide our future, based on our talents, when it was still a fuzzy dream for us.

Of all the anchors in my life…the most important one (from the perspective of  a single parent with three children) was my mother-in-law, Dee Dee.

Every time I hear this line of scripture my thoughts turn to her.

James 5:11 (ESV)
11 Behold, we consider those blessed who remained steadfast… and did Dee Dee ever remain steadfast! The family anchor!

Dee Dee helped me raise my children…hands down and was always there for me…encouraging me to travel when I received scholarships to tour, study, or teach abroad. “I’ve got it…you can’t not go!”

Dee Dee always wanted to travel and after Poppy’s retirement they both  were able to do just that…for which the whole family was so thankful…after all she had been our anchor and sacrificed daily for all of us…after raising her own six children, she kept grandchildren, friends’ children so they could work or travel and accomplish their dreams.

The “anchors” in our lives…the ‘stay home/go to‘  people usually never fully realize their utmost importance to the rest of the family or friends during their lifetime.

And it isn’t until these “anchors” are gone that we, too, fully realize their importance in our own lives…they ‘centered’ our lives by loving us unconditionally and cementing stability in our busyness…

*I don’t know if Mandy was trying to kiss her boyfriend at the first Easter Egg Hunt or punch him…but Dee Dee was right there to intervene either way! 🙂

I love the photo (below) because normally Dee Dee was always remembered more for opening and shutting her refrigerator….(she always had something to eat in there for anybody who just dropped by….amazing) than sitting behind William “Refrigerator” Perry.

However… this time Dee Dee didn’t have to cook and she seems quite amused (at the Charleston Clemson Athletic Dinner) watching William “Refrigerator” or simply “Fridge” Perry chowing down on his dinner.

So until tomorrow…Let us pause from our busy lives and thank the “anchors” in our lives for centering us… Thank the ones who remained ‘steadfast, loyal, and true so we could live our lives through and through.’

And then let’s never forget the one “Anchor” who waits for us….patiently and lovingly…saying “Fear not tomorrow…I am already there.”

About Becky Dingle

I was born a Tarheel but ended up a Sandlapper. My grandparents were cotton farmers in Laurens, South Carolina and it was in my grandmother’s house that my love of storytelling began beside an old Franklin stove. When I graduated from Laurens High School, I attended Erskine College (Due West of what?) and would later get my Masters Degree in Education/Social Studies from Charleston Southern. I am presently an adjunct professor/clinical supervisor at CSU and have also taught at the College of Charleston. For 28 years I taught Social Studies through storytelling. My philosophy matched Rudyard Kipling’s quote: “If history were taught in the form of stories, it would never be forgotten.” Today I still spread this message through workshops and presentations throughout the state. The secret of success in teaching social studies is always in the story. I want to keep learning and being surprised by life…it is the greatest teacher. Like Kermit said, “When you’re green you grow, when you’re ripe you rot.”

We miss the Dingles a lot. We even took my Mother to visit with them. They had something in common…6 children…4 daughters and 2 sons. Dee Dee was a very special person. After she passed we continued to go see Mr. Dingle who always had a twinkle in his eyes. If Fred was with me he would ask me why I brought him…and if I went by myself the first thing he would ask me is “where’s Fred?”….loved them and think about them whenever I drive by their house…both anchors for a lot of people…

That is true Gin-g! They were anchors for many people outside just the large family that kept getting larger. What a sacrifice and gift it is to be the one center in the universe for so many floundering orbits.

    Hi, Becky,
I’ve finally caught up with all my Becky-blog readings!! Youngest grandson (just turned 5) was here by himself for a week; then this past Tuesday I had a left shoulder replacement; & spent 2 nites in hospital (“complications”); came home Thursday, & grandson & parents left and it’s just me ‘n Bobby now. So I’m S-L-O-W-L-Y getting better each day! SLOWLY. Today was first to pick up computer and I’m typing “hunt & peck” style with one hand!
But I’ve been SO touched by all the posts about Poogie and just wanted to offer my condolences too, before I forget. I remember (I think) when he came on the scene; goldens are such sweet, loving animals anyway. I do hope that with all the creativeness pertaining to his passing that your grands will always have sweet, sweet memories of him.
And whew! That’s about all I’m going to attempt for now. Wore me out! I’m not sure exactly what your “prayer tree” is for, but you can put me on it for continued good recovery!
    Thanks, ol’ friend!
    Much love,
    Sis

Sis…I knew your surgery was coming up…but not this fast…sorry that you had some ‘hiccups’ with the procedure…especially after keeping your grandson for a week…you are one strong woman, girl. I had Rutledge and Eva Cate over this past weekend…we had a ball…but I am ready to sleep for about a week….you are definitely in my prayers…will catch you up later on the prayer tree idea. Take care friend…and heal! Love, Becky
